My interest in cakes started in 7th grade when, on a whim, I took a Wilton Cake Decorating course with my best friend. Every Tuesday and Thursday after school for about a month we would be the youngest people in the class that met in the local Ames department store. There, on card tables set up in the middle of the floral section, I discovered my love of making edible artwork. After the class ended, I kept up with the techniques for a while, but as time passed I became busy with other after school activities and laid my decorating bags aside.
As an Art major in college I noticed my tendency towards using thick globs of paint and very vibrant colors. At the time, it reminded me of my cake decorating past, but I didn’t think too much about it.
Once I graduated, I moved to Connecticut and landed a job at a Marketing and Promotions agency. It was there that I met a co-worker who shared my interest in Cake decorating. As a creative outlet, I started making cupcakes for co-worker’s birthdays, in themes that interested them or flavor combinations they requested. Somewhere in between the Monkey themed and the Chocolate lava cupcakes, I started getting referred to people outside the company. I soon had orders a few weekends a month, which is when I recruited my boyfriend to help out.
Now we can be found in the kitchen most weekends working on the latest birthday cake or coming up with new flavor combinations. We have a crew of devoted samplers whose suggestions and support have been amazing!
